The Jameson Sisters

St. Patrick’s Concert - March 14, 2025, 7:00 PM

Terry Kane

Jim Speer is a bass (and other instruments) player for several local dance and performing groups, including songwriting duo Winchester-Perry, Mr. David’s Drawings, Songs, and Silliness, and English dance band Earl Grey Hot. Many of our new arrangements for this year’s program are a product of Helene and Jim’s collaboration.  He has played in Philadelphia electro-folk band Broadside Electric, noise/performance art groups UNSOUND, and Invasion of Time. Currently Jim and Helene perform with the band Broadside Kinetic, which plays often for contra dances at the Irish Center in Philadelphia.

Terry Kane grew up in a proud community of Irish-Americans who had emmigrated to Addison, NY from Ireland at the time of the potato famine. The youngest of 11 children, she can’t remember a day without song and dance; harmonizing with her mother and siblings. Tap dancing and square dancing were also a part of every week but Terry’s mother was proudest of her grandfather’s Irish step dancing and the history of set dancing the family continued among the local Irish farmers on “Paddy’s Hill.” Terry received many honors in her high school choir and band programs and went on to pursue a music teaching career, performing in the 1980 Winter Olympic Choir and earning her Master’s degree from Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY. After years of teaching music in public schools, she now teaches privately. She is featured on 5 traditional Irish CDs, singing and accompanying herself on guitar and mandolin. Since moving to the Perkiomen Valley over 25 years ago, her main focus has been to study the Irish language locally and traveling to Ireland many times. She currently is teaching a class “Introduction to the Irish Language” for Celtic Cultural Alliance in Bethlehem and performs monthly at the Irish Center in Philadelphia and Molly Maguire’s Restaurant in Phoenixville as well as several times a week at private events across the Mid-Atlantic States www.terrykanesings.com.

Ellen Tepper and Terry Kane

Helene Zisook Speer was a classically trained violinist from the age of six and an alumna of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. In college, she turned her bow to Celtic, British, Eastern European, and Klezmer music as a founding member of the folk-rock band Broadside Electric and is featured on their many recordings. She has also been spotted playing avant-garde and progressive rock as well as musical theater. She regularly fiddles for folk dances in the Philadelphia area. She had her debut as a Jameson Sister at Church of the Holy Spirit on St. Patrick’s Day 2023 providing lively fiddle arrangements and vocal harmonies.

The Jameson Sisters - One of the founding members of the The Jameson Sisters, harpist Ellen Tepper lost her three-year battle with breast cancer. She loved performing at COHS and this concert will be a tribute to her. Paintings and sculptures also flew from her hands. Some of her works and her CDs will be on display and for sale. You can also listen to her music free at www.jamesonsisters.com. Ellen introduced Terry to Helene specifically to play for the Church of the Holy Spirit concert 2 years ago. Ellen didn’t mention to Helene, the fact that she would be required to learn some Irish language. Tonight we will add Jim Speer, Helene’s husband, playing bass, to help supply some of those low notes and some of the humor we will be missing in Ellen’s absence.
