Engaging New Corridors Of Recreation and Education

Morris Arboretum trip!

ENCORE operates in conjunction with the Pastoral Care Ministries. This ministry at COHS is designed to provide adults with opportunities for community through recreation, education and spiritual exploration.” The group meets at various venues in neighboring communities. The group is currently being coordinated by Louise Beebe and Maryanne Swartz.

All adults at Holy Spirit are invited to join ENCORE friends at several outings planned in the next few months. ENCORE stands for Engaging New Corridors Of Recreation and Education, so we try to plan a variety of events, including entertainment, art, music, social gatherings and visits to historical places in the area. We are always open to suggestions.

All adults (parishioners, friends, family, guests) are invited to join us for our upcoming ENCORE activities. New folks are always welcome and carpooling can be arranged.

2:00 PM – Visit 250th Anniversary Art Exhibit at Michener Museum in Doylestown

A new exhibition of paintings of the historic events of Washington crossing the Delaware and a full-sized toy brick reproduction of the Crossing are highlights of the 250th anniversary art exhibit currently on display at the Michener Museum, 138 S. Pine St. in Doylestown.

You are invited to join Encore friends at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15 to view these and other works by modern and contemporary artists in the exhibit, “The Crossing: Picturing the American Revolution.”  We will also be getting together for lunch at Noon prior to visiting the museum.

According to the website, the exhibit features the Washington crossing painting of artist Ai Weiwei and other artists “that offer new conceptions of this historic event,” including local, national and international artists Edward Hicks, William Francis Taylor, Charles W. Hargens, Robert Beck, Mort Kunstler, Mark Thomas Gibson and Kent Monkman.

The 10 x 30 x 10-foot mixed media sculpture of full-sized figures is titled “Miracles and Glory Abound” and was produced by American sculptor and painter Vanessa German. It is a reproduction of the famous 1851 Emmanuel Leutze painting, “Washington Crossing the Delaware.”

Also on display outside the museum is a new garden installation, “The Short Line” designed by artist Jackie Sumell to mark the site of the museum where there were prison cells in a jail at one time. According to the website, it is part of “Behind These Walls: Reckoning with Incarceration,” a multi-year initiative of the museum that offers programs confronting the site’s former life as a county jail.

Museum admission is $13 for seniors and $15 for adults. The museum is handicap accessible and wheelchairs are available at no charge.  For more information, visit https://michenerartmuseum.org.

In addition to visiting the museum, we can meet to enjoy lunch at Noon at the Bacco Bistro Restaurant,  478 N. Main St., Doylestown (in the Target Shopping Center). The restaurant is handicap accessible. View the menu here.

1:30 PM Tour Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum in Horsham

Owned and operated by the Delaware Valley Historical Aircraft Association (DVHAA), the collection is, according to the website, wingsoffreedommuseum.org, “one of the country’s most important collections of statically displayed aircraft.”  It explains that the inventory spans from the dawn of flight through the two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and beyond.

The most recently restored project is the Sikorsky VH-34D, an aircraft which served as the first Marine One “Sea Bat” Helicopter which transported President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957. Among the others recently restored are the McDonnell Douglas F-4A Phantom and Bell UH-1V Huey .There is also a SH-2G helicopter simulator for visitors to sit in.

The museum is located on the property of the former factory of Harold F. Pitcairn, where the website explains that “Pitcairn’s development of the articulating rotohead established Willow Grove as the birthplace of rotary winged flight and helicopter aviation.”  It notes that an autogiro developed by Pitcairn was flown there in April 1931 by Amelia Earhart.

Admission to the museum is $10 per adult and $8 per senior adult 65+. The museum is handicap accessible.

Before visiting the museum, we can meet for brunch at 11:30 a.m. at the historic Daddypops Diner, 232 N. York Road, Hatboro. The diner, which has a jukebox and retro style interior, is know for its award-winning breakfast classics. It has been shown on the television show, “Diners, Drive-ins, Dives.” Due to its age and style, it is not handicap accessible. For menu, visit daddypopsdiner.net
