ENCORE operates in conjunction with the Pastoral Care Ministries. This ministry at COHS is designed to provide adults with opportunities for community through recreation, education and spiritual exploration.” The group meets at various venues in neighboring communities. The group is currently being coordinated by Louise Beebe and Maryanne Swartz.
All adults at Holy Spirit are invited to join ENCORE friends at several outings planned in the next few months. ENCORE stands for Engaging New Corridors Of Recreation and Education, so we try to plan a variety of events, including entertainment, art, music, social gatherings and visits to historical places in the area. We are always open to suggestions.
All adults (parishioners, friends, family, guests) are invited to join us for our upcoming ENCORE activities. New folks are always welcome and carpooling can be arranged.

Saturday, October 18
2:00 PM - "Fantasticks" show at DeSales University Theater (with lunch preceding at noon)
Tickets are selling fast for the DeSales University’s Act 1 Performing Arts theater production of the musical play, “The Fantasticks,” this Fall. So order tickets now and join us to attend the show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 in the university’s Schubert Theatre at 2755 Station Ave. in Center Valley. The theater is handicapped accessible. The story of this musical, which is the longest running show in the history of American theatre, is about two young people, Matt and Luisa, who live next store to each other and whose romance is orchestrated by their feuding fathers. The musical has memorable numbers, including “Try to Remember” and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain.” The original 0ff-Broadway show ran for 42 years and was awarded Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre in 1991.

2:00 PM - Tour of U.S. Air Force Museum in Boyertown (with lunch preceding at noon)
Take a walk back in time with us when the United States Air Force led the fight for freedom around the world during World War II - as we tour the General Carl A. Spaatz U.S. Air Force Museum, 10 General Spaatz Ave. in Boyertown.
According to the website, https://www.spaatzmuseum.org, the “living museum concept” places the visitor in the time frame of World War II and includes 10 exhibits in almost 6,000 square feet of space.
The museum honors General Carl A. Spaatz, a native of Boyertown, who was the first chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force in Washington.
In addition to information and recordings on the life and missions of General Spaatz and the town of Boyertown, the exhibits include a diorama of the Air Force B17 July 1944 bombing, gear and equipment of the times, a film about bombing raids over Germany, information on the French Resistance aiding downed pilots, POW information, and an exhibit about the U.S. home front during the war.
A tour guide will be available to describe the exhibits and there are also listening devices and QR codes to use on your own phones. The museum is completely ADA handicapped on one floor, with exhibit entrances and bathrooms accessible for wheelchairs. Admission fee is $10.50.
According to the website, General Carl A. Spaatz was a 1914 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and studied at the Aviation School in San Diego, CA. He received many distinguished awards as a pilot and performed in many flight leadership roles before assuming in 1945 the command of the U.S. Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific and supervising the final bombing of Japan, including the two atomic bomb missions. He was present at all three signings of surrender by the enemy at Rheims, Berlin and Tokyo. In September 1947 he was appointed by President Harry S. Truman as the first chief of staff of the new United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of general in June 1948.

4:00 PM - Candlelight Tour of Morgan Log House of Towamencin in Lansdale (with lunch preceding at 2 PM)
Join us to learn about the holiday traditions of early Welsh and German settlers to our area at a candlelight tour of the restored Morgan Log House of Towamencin, an eighteenth-century log home at 850 Weikel Road in Lansdale,.
The annual “Candlelight at Morgan Log House” event offers a tour of the historic home decorated for the season in three different rooms, displaying early Welsh traditions, early German traditions, and American traditions of the 1930s.There is also music, story telling, holiday cheer and refreshments. There is a $5 fee.
Although the exhibits are all on the first floor, the house is not considered handicapped accessible since there is a step into the house. There is parking in front of the house and across the street.
According to the website, www.morganloghouse.org, the log house was built in the 1770s on land originally owned by Daniel Boone’s maternal grandparents, Edward and Elizabeth Morgan, who were among the earliest Welsh settlers in the area. It has fine examples of antique furniture, metals, household implements and colonial period decorative arts. The Towamencin Historical Society (now the Morgan Log House Historical Society) was formed to oversee the restoration, completed in 1976. In 1973 the Morgan House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
